Take to the skies by visiting this work which dominates the village. A striking return to the past, guaranteed immersion!

Guardian of the Sauer valley, the work of Four à Chaux is located on a height dominating the village of Lembach. It bears the name of an old lime kiln.
The 5 km of galleries go 30 m underground. 24 officers and 600 men lived there. They belonged to fortress infantry (RIF), artillery and engineer regiments. They were mobilized several times before returning to their post at the end of August 1939. As there was no action between September 39 and May 40, they organized themselves, seized the cattle which wandered in the streets of Lembach whose population had been evacuated... The visitor will become familiar with their living conditions by visiting the dormitories, the toilets, the kitchens and the infirmary.
The work was the target of the Stukas from June 40. Devoid of effective anti-aircraft defense, it nevertheless resisted and held out for another five days after the armistice which took effect on June 26. After special negotiations at Wiesbaden, the troops were forced to surrender but came out with the honors of war on 2 July.
The Germans then occupied the fort, stripped it of everything they could use on the Atlantic Wall. The overpressure gas tests caused considerable damage.
The layout resembles that of other forts, except that the men's entrance being located 24m higher than that of the ammunition, the fort has an inclined plane allowing equipment and ammunition to be transported from the ammunition entrance to to the upper gallery.
Good visit, walking shoes and warm clothes (13°).
