Built in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries then modernized. You can observe the same principle of defense there as at the Château de la Wasenbourg in Niederbronn-les-Bains.
The house leans on a blind shield wall. This covers a wide, flat attacking front and also protects the farmyard. During the gun era, the defense was completed with a pentagonal bastion to the east and a large round tower to the south. This barbican even has horizontal-firing gunboats.
The history of New and Old Windstein is not easy to disentangle. New Windstein was definitively abandoned after the Thirty Years' War at the end of the XNUMXth century.
New Windstein is now experiencing a revival. A dynamic association restores and enhances this ruin which presents exceptional architectural particularities and which is particularly well preserved and maintained.
