The congregation of the Sisters of the Most Holy Savior was founded in 1849 by Elisabeth Eppinger, who became Sister Alphonse-Marie. At the end of 1852, the community had 153 nuns and around thirty establishments. Becoming too small and not having enough space for an extension, the house of formation (novitiate) was transferred in 1857 to Oberbronn in the former castle of the counts of Strahlenheim which became the Mother House of the congregation in 1880. Today Today the convent of Niederbronn-les-Bains serves as a retirement home for the elderly.
The birthplace of Elisabeth Eppinger can be seen on Rue du Général de Gaulle.
