The charcoal kiln: wood, charcoal, and people is an interpretive space dedicated to the history of charcoal and charcoal burners, built at the foot of Fleckenstein Castle. It is co-financed by local authorities, the French government, the European Union, and the Fleckenstein charcoal burners' association (Lembach).
The charcoal kiln: wood, charcoal, and people is an interactive exhibit about the history of charcoal around the world. Through information panels, photos, hands-on activities, and a short film, visitors, admitted free of charge, can discover the importance of charcoal for the development of humankind. The building, located at the foot of Fleckenstein Castle, was constructed using local wood and resembles a charcoal kiln in its shape and color. The project was funded by the municipality of Lembach, the Sauer-Pechelbronn inter-municipal authority, the CEA (European Collectivity of Alsace), the French government, the European Union, and the Fleckenstein Charcoal Makers Association, the project owner.
