The history of Wittschloessel seems to merge with the neighboring castle of Wineck. It would have been destroyed in 1677. The remains (a surrounding wall and foundations on a small rocky bar) are rare in Wittschloessel.

Former property of the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the medieval fort welcomes hikers in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Northern Vosges. Many walkers like to linger at the top of the Wittberg, at an altitude of 444m.
