The "Stolpersteine" are 10 cm3 paving stones covered with a brass plaque. They commemorate the victims of National Socialist persecution during the Second World War, for reasons of race, politics, gender, etc.
This memorial concept, conceived in the 1990s by Berlin artist Gunter Demnig, involves sealing the Stolpersteine in the ground on the public highway, in front of the victims' last residence before their arrest or deportation.
The memorial stones are placed by Gunter Demnig himself, who sees his work as a concrete and personal form of commemoration that complements ritualized and institutionalized commemoration. In this way, "history becomes understandable as a local event," and the excuse "we knew nothing" no longer applies.
More than 110 stones were laid in 000 countries, most of them in Germany, with less than a thousand in France, 29 in Alsace and 250 in Bas-Rhin.
In Wissembourg, there are 8 first stations to discover in the city center.
