Impressive semi-troglodyte castle built in the 13th century by a branch of the Fleckensteins who took the name of Froensburg. Having become a den of knight-brigands, the castle was besieged and destroyed in 1348 by the Alliance for Public Peace (Landfriedensbund). The castle was rebuilt in 1389 by the brothers Emich and Sygfrid de Loewenstein to make it a palatine fief. In 1481, it was partly owned by the Fleckensteins who carried out work there, in particular the construction of a residential tower on the south rock (the ogival door bears the date of 1484). After the annexation of Alsace to France, the castle will be dismantled, like many fortified castles, in 1677, but this one may have already been abandoned for a long time...

By municipal decree of March 11, 2022, access to the castle is currently prohibited for security reasons.

Access: in Niedersteinbach, follow the D 3 towards Lembach. After 1,2 km, just before the bridge that crosses the Steinbach, take the path that heads left and leads to a picnic area with parking and shelter. From there, take the path marked with a yellow diamond. It takes 30 minutes to walk to the castle.
